AKPAFU ODOMI HOST WORLD RURAL WOMEN DAY CELEBRATION IN HOHOE MUNICIPALITY


Rural women in Hohoe Municipality yesterday converge at the E.P Park in Akpafu Domi to celebrate world rural women day which falls on October 15 every year to recognize the immense contribution and multiple roles of rural women to the development of communities across the world.
This year's celebration, the first of its kind at Akpafu Odomi organized by the Development Action Association (D.A.A) with support from the German Association of Rural Women targets rural women in rice farming with the theme, "Challenges and opportunities in rural agriculture for Gender Equality and the empowerment of rural women in key decision making
The ceremony started with a float on the principal street of Hohoe with placards such as women rice farmers are suffering, rural farmers are nation builders, rural women voice matter among others.
Speaking at the event grounds, Mrs. Grace Quaye, the national President of Development Action Association (D.A.A) attests the need for rural women to be encouraged to do more. She said her outfit is a liaison between NGOs and various communities or association in the country. She outlined some challenges rural women farmers face in rice farming.
Meanwhile, Mrs. Janet Adade, the President of Madomise Women Farmers Association, a farming group based in Akpafu, the major beneficiary of this support relish the need for the advocacy programme and also the introduction of a new milling process which has reduced the level of stone contents in rice. She equally spoke on the reason for the expensive nature of the local rice.
 They have a membership strength of 300 women who produce 2,ooo tones of rice every year.
Hohoe Municipal Agric Officer, Mr. George Asare made a quick response on the reason for the change in the fertilizer subsidy process
Randy a formidable member of the NDC and secretary to the Member of Parliament for Hohoe, Hon. Bernice Heloo donated two streetlight bulbs to the people of Akpafu Odomi at the ceremony.
Among other dignitaries present were Mr. Leonard Heh, the presiding member who represented the MCE, Hon. Teddy Ofori, Chiefs and Queen mothers from surrounding areas, a number of Assembly Members from the municipality, executives of political parties.
